"Honesty is the cornerstone of character. the honest man or woman seeks not merely to avoid criminal or illegal acts but to be scrupulously fair, upright fearless in both action and expression. honesty pays dividends both and in peace of mind."
B.C Forbes

reflection: i believe what Forbes is saying is that with out being honest you're basically worthless. honesty can lead you to many things just like he said. money and peace of mind can be achieved through honesty. for example, me and my past experience. i went to the market to buy some things i needed to bake a cake. then i saw a man drop his wallet i ran to give it to him and he ended up buying me the things i needed. i said no so many times but he said he would not let me pay.
Honesty contributes to good mental health.

"Stop worrying about whether you're going to win or lose and focus your full attention on whats happening right this moment."
Phil Jackson
11 world champions

reflection: what you do right now is something you must enjoy in the moment. Moments do last forever but once you've left the moment you never really enjoyed it. for example.. me and school. i should stop worrying if i'm going to get a B or C for English. i should do all the work assignments and  do them correctly so i can pass.
Time management
8 of 10
Master the moments and you may be a real pro when it comes to juggling the many demands on your time – classes homework and activities—with some family help. College gives you an even bigger chance to sharpen your time management skills by doing it all on your own. And that’s a good thing since most jobs require multitasking. You might need to take care of current clients while attracting new ones respond to emails while working on a major presentation or order tomorrows produce while planning next week’s menu.
Someone said “Wherever you are, be there” focus on the present moment and give it all your attention. Don’t let your mind drift and wander here and there when you need to be thinking and concentrating on the moment at hand. You can’t go back and recapture this moment so make the most of it while it NOW master the present and you will master the future. Work smart by mastering the present moment.

"TRUTH IS THE ONLY SAFE GROUND TO STAND UPON."
ELIZABETH CADY STANTON

REFLECTION: IN ORDER FOR SOMEONE TO ACTUALLY STAY ON THE "SAFE" SIDE IS TO TELL THE TRUTH. FOR EXAMPLE WHEN YOU'RE IN A STORE AND YOU SEE SOMEONE STEALING SOMETHING. YOU EITHER TELL THE TRUTH AND KNOW THAT YOU WILL BE SAFE AND SOUND BECAUSE YOU DID THE RIGHT THING, OR YOU STAY QUIET WHICH IS BASICALLY THE SAME THING AS BEING AN ACCOMPLICE. CHOOSE THE RIGHT AND KNOW WHICH SIDE YOU ARE ON, TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION THAT WHEN CHOOSING THE RIGHT, IT IS THE BEST CHOICE.
Attention to Detail
7 of 10
When you double check your calculations for a math problem or cite sources carefully in a research paper, you’re paying close attention to detail. That skill comes in handy in any work place, whether you maintain a database keep a log of the hours you spend with clients or write emails.
John wooden UCLA s former great basketball coach who lead his teams to ten consecutive national championships was asked what he attributed his success to. Among the number of things he mentioned that paying attention to details was one of the most important qualities for successful coaching and for high achievement in any worthwhile pursuit. He even payed attention to how his players would lace up and tie their shoe strings. If they didn’t tie them correctly, he would teach them how.

Details may be small things but from small things come great things. Therefore pay attention to details and you will experience substantial progress in your overall educational attainment.

"Everyone is the architect of their own learning."
Claudius

reflection:
learning is something you must take into consideration and serious. only you can learn for yourself. which means that the "Architect" is basically you . you must build your own learning and process. for example i am the architect of my own learning. no one can and will learn for me. i must do this on my own and on my own time.

"Start with what is right rather than what is acceptable."
Peter F. Drucker

reflection: i believe what Peter is trying to say is that you should always do the right thing no matter what. for example if a person is trying to get a job and she or he has to sleep with the boss, this is where you  take action. if you choose to sleep with the boss then you are just doing what is acceptable to get that job. but if you say no to the boss then that is the right thing to do and the best.
Initiative
5 of 10
Initiative is creativity inventiveness originality ingenuity imagination. Every time you respond in class, every time you choose your own research topic, every time you put together your own interpretation of a piece of literature you take initiative. And future values can do professionals who come up with new ideas and chart their own courses through projects employees who are self-reliant. Self-reliant people are self-starters who don’t procrastinate on getting the job done. They know what is required to do and do it. They don’t wait to be told many times. Succeeding in High School College and in the career world is taking the initiative.

"to be Great - - Concentrate"
Orson Sweet Mardin

reflection: in order for you to achieve something you must concentrate on what you want to achieve. for example if i want accomplish something in the summer like losing weight. i must concentrate in losing weight and be committed to it. the only way i'll get good results is if i actually stick to it and function with it.

Problem solving skills
4 of 10
Problem solving goes far beyond your math textbook. Every assignment is an opportunity to weigh all possible solutions carefully and choose the one you think is best. As a working professional you’ll be solving problems regularly, whether it’s fixing a bug in a computer program or overcoming budget shortfalls. Problem solving situation occur extensively and frequently; therefore be ready when they come. When problems or challenges occur some people look at them at negative experiences as a crisis.  These people are the ones who live day by day with gloom and negativism in their attitudes. But the really successful people are cheerful and optimistic, are those who look at problems as opportunities to learn grow expand their horizon and make new discoveries, they look on the bright side of things and live happy lives.

"Education is a marathon not a sprint"
anon

reflection: what the person is trying to say is you should know the difference between wanting to actually learn and focus and take a while to learn things rather than to just get an A in the class and copying everyone's work. for example college, i want to go for my PhD however i must realize that school is going to be a hassle and take into consideration that classes might be hard. i will sacrifice my time and any other time i can to learn the material. you can't just read it once and say oh i don't get it. You must keep thinking positive  getting my degree is a marathon, which means it will take a while. it isn't a sprint where you can easily get it.

Team work skills
3 of 10
Every time your class breaks into groups to tackle a challenge, you build teamwork skills. In college you’ll continue to have these opportunities to practice voicing your opinion, listening and responding to others and reaching compromises. By the time you leave college you can be an expert in this important workplace skill.
Together
Everyone
Achieves
More
Individually you can achieve so much but when you work with others for a common cause the same objectives you can accomplish a tremendous amount more. You synergize your talents knowledge, and skills with those whom you work. All members of the team are edified together a type of edification you can’t obtain by working alone.

"The man who has no imagination had no wings."
Muhammad Ali

Reflection: basically what he is trying to say is imagination is a thing that one must have. if you do not have an imagination then you have no wings. for example if i believe i am going to make many baskets when i play basketball i have wings. and if i dont believe in that then i have no imagination therefore i have no wings.

Speaking skills
2 of 10
When you’re assigned a class presentation think twice before dismissing it as an unimportant part of your education. Employers’ looks for speaking skills in job applicants, who may have to give presentations to clients or represent their organization in the field. Its never too soon to practice good eye contact and other public speaking techniques. http://www.newswiretoday.com/news/17334/
According to the block list the fear of public speaking ranks number one in the minds of the majority of people. Far above the fear of death and disease, comes the fear of standing in front of a crowd. Joel Weiner noted author and public speaker wants to help people overcome that fear.
“The biggest fear is public speaking with 15 percent of American experiencing a dramatic fear of it “ said Doctor Michael Telch of the laboratory for study of anxiety disorders (LSAD) in the department of psychology at the university of Texas at Austin  “People have had to turn down jobs and certainly students have dropped classes because of it”
Regardless of your occupation your success depends a great deal upon your ability to communicate efficiently! Whether you’re running a meeting selling a product making presentation motivating coworkers or just communication one on one with others, you’ll get far better results if you can speak persuasively smoothly and intelligently.

"nothing in the world can take the [place of persistence. talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. the slogan 'Press On' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race."
-Calvin Coolidge, 30th president of the United States

Reflection: Persistence is the only thing that will keep you motivated to actually complete your goal. without persistence you would do and be nothing. for example in life when i go to college i will keep persisting in getting good grades because i want to graduate  college and become someone in life. i can only achieve my diploma by persistence.

Writing skills
1 of 10
Communication is at the top of the list of skills that employers look for. And communication in the workplace often means writing.
Health professionals keep patient charts, researchers depend on the money they collet by writing grant applications, software engineers write te4chnical specifications and nearly everyone writes e-mail to people inside and outside their organization. And before you even get the chance to interview for a job, you’ll need to present yourself in cover letters and resumes
So by taking writing serious and doing your best on every research paper every lab report you write every new post you write in your blog site and every writing activity you engage in you’re preparing yourself for a good career.

Online Learning
Part 1
Read Between the lines
Make a judgment about the site reliability based on your own analysis of the site and the information it contains. Here are some ways to do this:
·        Look for facts you know or can check with a trusted sources. If the site gets those facts right it’s more likely that the other facts on the site are also accurate.
·        Study the language used. Is it angry satiric or overly impassioned? This may indicate that the site is biased.
·        Consider whether the arguments are logical and backed up by evidence and whether the site presents only one point of view.
·        Check the links to the sources that the author acknowledges. Scholarly writing whether in print or online should include a bibliography.

"The right way is not always the popular and easy way. standing for right when it is unpopular is a true test of moral character."
Margaret Chase Smith
i believe that Margaret is trying to say is that for example if a girl is a "nerd" and she is being bullied and many people don't stand up for her.. that you should be the one who should stand up for her because it isn't fair to her. be the one who makes a difference. choose the right and many people might not like that decision but who cares as long as you know what you are doing is the right thing.

Part 3
Dot what?
Look at the site’s address. What follows the dot?
·       Dot-com is not only for businesses; anyone can use it. Dot-coms include well known and respected companies, but also private individuals.
·       Dot-org usually indicates a not-for-profit organization. Many dot-orgs present unbiased information but others have political agendas focus on debatable issues instead of facts and might not present all sides of the argument.
·       Dot-gov indicates a government website at the federal state or local level. The federal government is a good source of statistics and its sites are widely considered among the most reliable.
·       Dot-mil is used by sites that are part of the military.
·       Dot-edu usually indicates a university website. While its published research is generally considered very trustworthy anyone associated with the university whether a world renowned scholar or freshman can be given space on its serve. Professors sometimes put student course work on the web but that doesn’t mean they’re vouching for the information accuracy.

·        Who wrote the web page? If you can’t identify the individual or organization responsible for the information don’t use it.
·        What are the author’s qualifications for writing on the subject?
·        Has the article passed through an editorial process designed to ensure quality and accuracy?
·        What is the web site purpose? Look for motives—like selling products or winning votes—that could result in biased or incomplete information.
·        Is the information accurate? Is it up to date?
·        Where did the author get his information?

It’s online but is it on target?
Part 1
Using the web wisely
Thanks to the web information is easy to find. However, it is also easy to post something online. Anyone can do it. You’ve probably used the internet to do research for a paper to help you decide which product to buy or to form an opinion about current events. Looking up information online is fast and convenient. But when you do online research it is important to find sites you can trust. Many websites claim to have the facts, but are full of errors. Others present information on a biased way—the only give one side of an argument. How can you tell reliable sources from unreliable one? Also it is critical that you post online only that which is descent and appropriate never anything pornographic, vulgar, indecent, out of taste, untruthful, or obscene. Post those things that will make a good name for you and your organization, that will promote goodwill and be of benefit to the world.

Tip 5: keep a list of questions
When you feel confused about something you’re reading, write down any questions you have. Sometimes your questions are answered as you read further. If not don’t be afraid to ask for help. Remember teachers create assignments; they’ve read the texts and are familiar with them. When you have specific questions your teacher can provide answers that will help you better understand the material. Learning is rooted in questions developed and asked by the learner. Asking questions to you, to the teacher or to others is a great leaning method. When you cease to ask questions as you read. Questioning immerses you into the material you are reading and therefore will expand your mental capacity more than anything else.
The philosopher Sir Francis Bacon said, “Knowledge is power”. Improving your reading comprehension is the key to gaining important knowledge and making the most of your education. So pick up a book and a pen.

Tip 3: Do research
Literary critics have written vast numbers of analytical and critical pieces on countless books. If you’re having trouble understanding a particular text, do some research and see what knowledgeable sources have to say about it. In addition to increasing your comprehension you’ll also be showing initiative something teachers always like to see. Always use legitimate and scholarly sources, not condensed study guides.
Tip 4: use a dictionary
Make sure you have access to a dictionary when you’re reading. You can often figure out the meaning of an unfamiliar word by using context clues, but sometimes you can’t. Rather than simply skipping over the words you don’t know take time to look them up. The results are well worth the effort. Your comprehension will increase greatly, and you’ll build your vocabulary at the same time.

Reading and writing go hand in hand. The better you understand a text, the likely you are to successfully communicate your thoughts about it in writing. So it’s important to develop strong skills in both areas. With that in mind, here’s how to improve your reading comprehension.
Tips 1-2
Tip 1: annotate
Be an active reader. Instead of passively reading a text take notes about important story
elements, key factual information and significant ideas in the text.
Tip 2: Note the author’s writing style
Every author writes with a purpose using deliberate methods to successfully relate specific information to the audience. When you’re reading look for patterns in the author’s writing. For example you may notice repetition of key words, phrases or symbols – or the use of a distinct type of sentence structure. Authors employ these writing strategies to help readers comprehend a central argument or theme, so be sure to explore how these techniques create meaning.

3. Set attainable Goals
If you’re having trouble writing a 25 page paper for class because it seems like such a big job, don’t focus on the final number. Break the paper down and consider each section individually. You can handle any project in small chunks.
4. Find a social support Network
Create a group of people around you who want to help you succeed. Mentors can be teachers or family friends who can give you guidance and help you develop new skills. Counselors can help you with planning your courses and stating to explore colleges. You can also reach out to friends and peers who can motivate you by listening and sharing ideas.

5 tips for Staying Motivated
Tips 1-2
To succeed in high school and college, you have to do your best at all times. But sometimes it’s hard to stay motivated, even when you really care about the work you’re doing. Here are five ways to stay on the right track.
1.    Focus on High – Impact Activities
The key to success in school is staying focused on your course work. Make a list to get an overall picture of your workload before you start to tackle any of it. Then make a plan. Although it’s tempting to do the simplest assignments first those that take more time and effort to accomplish are probably the ones that you’ll learn the most from. To determine what your priorities are rank your assignments in the order of their importance. Then rearrange your time and devote more energy toward those that have the greatest impact on your course work and grades. For example even though all homework assignments are important studying for a midterm exam takes priority over writing a paragraph for English class. As you complete each task think of it as another step to your way to college success.

2. Create new challenges
Changing your approach can help you stay interested in what you’re doing. If you’ve been given an assignment similar to one you’ve done in the past think about it in a different way. If you wrote an essay for a creative writing assignment last year, try a poem this time. For books reports pick a history book instead of another biography.

student success statement
"You have only always to do what is right. it will become easier by practice and you enjoy in the midst of your trials the pleasure of an approving conscience.
Robert E Lee
reflection: i believe that this means that you must always choose the right. even though it may seem like the wrong thing to do. it is not therefor you should always CTR. at times it may be difficult but once you start choosing the right it gets easier. for example i know that if i try to tell the truth it will hurt someone. however i know that it will get easier day by day.

Take Control of homework
So it doesn’t control you
Part 3
Take advantage of any free time
If you have s study period or a long bus ride use the time to review notes, prepare for an upcoming class or start your homework. Flash cards are a great learning tool. They are easy to make easy to handle and are a marvelous tool to help you learn and remember anything. Punch a hole in the left corner of each index card and connect the stack of your flashcards with a ring. Then the cards are bound like this act like a small book with pages. You can even have separate ringed stacks for each subject. WHATEVER YOU WANT TO REMEMBER PUT IT ON A CARD.
Study with a friend
Get together with friends and classmates to quiz each other compare notes and predict test questions. Consider joining a study group.
Communicate
If you have concerns about the amount or type of homework you have you may want to talk to your family teachers or counselor. They can help you understand how time you need to allot for homework and to manage your tasks.
Celebrate your achievements
Reward yourself for hitting milestones or doing something well.
