Student success statement

“Success is dependent on effort”

-Sophocles, Greek dramatist

Reflection: I believe what Sophocles is trying to say is you can only depend on yourself. If you want to succeed it depends on you and how much work and effort you put in. in school if you want to pass a test with an A you must study and study and study to achieve that A. if you get an A then you’ll know you worked hard and put all you’re effort to it.

How to take on a college studying

Part 2

Choose where to study

Where you should study depends in two factors; the environment in which you are best able to concentrate and the type of work you are planning to do.

·         The best places to study have good light, a comfortable temperature and enough desk space—usually your dorm room, your apartment or the library.

·         For completing problem sets or brainstorming possible test questions, you may want to study with a group or at least in a setting where fellow students are available for discussion.

·         When you are reading book chapters or working on a research paper, you are probably better off in a less social environment.

Improve your study habits

Here are simple steps you can take to help you get a handle on studying :

·         Have a routine for where and when you study.

·         Choose reasonable and specific goals that you can accomplish for each study session.

·         Do things that are harder or require more intense thought at your most productive time of the day.

·         Take breaks if you need them so you don’t waste time looking at material but not absorbing it.

·         Get to know students whom you respect and can study with or contact to ask question.

·         Keep up with the work load and seek help when you need it.

Deb and Jenna
Summary & reflection:
Jenna won the Sportsmanship award from the U.S Olympic Committee. Jenna helped Deb cross the finish line by pushing and pulling her to the finish line. What had happened to Deb is she was running in front of Jenna all the 3 miles they had been running, and all of a sudden she stopped. She stopped because Deb had a broken hip and the pain was killing her so she could not keep running. Therefore Jenna the good person she is pushed deb to finish because she knew that Deb was going to win and she wanted to make that reality happen. Jenna pushed deb in front of her so she knew Deb would win.

Reflection: I believe that most people I know would not do anything like this. Good sportsmanship was shown by Jenna and she got rewarded. It’s incredible how Jenna was this kind. She chose the right

How to Take on College Studying
Part 1
Develop good study habits
in college, you’ll need to build on the study skills that you learned in high school. The demands of a college class are probably more rigorous than those you are used to. You can succeed by knowing what to expect and how to handle it. Think of college as a full time job, in which you spend 40 hours a week on class, labs, study groups and homework.
Being organized and using your time well are essential. Learn more about time management, and use the guidelines below to develop your study skills.
Decide when to study
Work out about how many hours you need to study every day. Then make a schedule.
·        Figure out what blocks of time you have available throughout the day, in the evenings, and on weekends.
·        Consider what time of day you are most alert—there are morning people and night owls—and try to schedule your studying accordingly.
·        Think about whether you do better studying for a few hours at a time or sitting sown for marathon sessions.

Student Success Statement
“Choosing the right is always the right thing to do.”
Alex Linares
Reflection: I believe what Linares is trying to say is that you should always do the right because it is the only way you’ll know that you have done the right thing. For example, you have a test on Monday but you got invited to go to a party on Saturday. Should you stay home or go? If you chose the right then you would stay home and study for Monday’s test. Then you will get a good score on the test. Therefore choose the right, it’s  always the best thing to do.

10 time management tips for students
Tips 5-10
Tip 5. Review your notes everyday!
Reviewing helps you reinforce what you’ve learned, so you need less time to study before a test. You’ll also be ready if you get called on in a class or have to take a pop quiz.
Tip 6. Get a good night sleep
Your brain needs rest to perform at its peak. Lack of sleep makes the day seem longer and your tasks seem more difficult.
Tip 7. Communicate your schedule to others.
If phone calls or text messages are proving to be a distraction, tell your friends that you are only available at certain times of the day and not to expect a response at other times.
Tip 8. Become a Taskmaster.
Give yourself a time budget and plan your activities accordingly. Figure out how much free time you have each week before you add any commitments.
Tip 9. Don’t waste time agonizing.
Instead of agonizing and procrastinating just do it. Wasting an entire evening worrying about something that you are supposed to be doing is not productive, and can increase your stress.
Tip 10. Determine your priorities.
You can’t do everything at once. Establish the important of each item. Then set realistic goals that are attainable.

"Its better to be alone than to be in bad company."
ANON
reflection: this means it is better to be yourself than to try to fit in with the crowd. in example would be, when you are at home studying and you're "friends" ask you let's go to party. and you would go and drink, do drugs etc. that is plain wrong and disturbing. you should have stayed at home studying and choosing the right. you're friends are the bad company; therefore it is better to be alone at least you'll know you're not doing anything wrong.

10 Time Management Tips for Students

3) Heart: always do what is right so your heart, your conscience, will feel peaceful. When you do wrong your conscience will prick you and create regretful sensations within your heart. When you do what you honestly feel you won’t have any regrets. Your heart is your internal compass- it gives you direction and discernment. Just like a magnetic compass gives directions, even true north, your personal compass, your heart, will point you in the true north, the exact directions and paths you need to trod.
4) Soul: Study scriptures and other sacred literature daily. In other words, feed your spirit because your spirit need spiritual food just like your body needs temporal food to survive. Pondering, meditating, and reflecting are excellent Soul- Sharpening activities. Try writing your thoughts, feelings, aspirations, concerns and decisions in a diary or journal. Writing makes you focus and make good decisions.

Loyalty

reflection: Sarah was a girl in the baseball/ Softball team and she had never done a home run. Then finally she hit a home run however, when she realized she hadn't touched first base, she ran back to tough it. all of a sudden when she went back, her knee i guess collapsed. then she stayed in first base and kept hugging it she could not move. two girls from the other team helped her run all the bases. i believe this is the nicest thing anyone could have ever done to an opposing team member. Mallory and Liz have such good sportsmanship.

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw
Teens should never get too busy living to take time to renew themselves. When teens “Sharpen the saw” they are keeping their personal self sharp so that they can be better deal with life. It means regularly renewing and strengthening the four key dimensions of life            -body, mind, heart, and soul
1.     Body. Eat wholesome foods, fruits, vegetables, legumes. Avoid illegal drugs, smoking, alcohol, tobacco products, tattooing. Excersize regularly and effectively. Get plenty of rest at night. Get to bed early at night and get up early each morning. :Early to bed early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.”
2.     Mind. Think positively. Read. Study. Think. Analyze.  Seek to read a good book each month. Then each week. Ask intelligent questions. Observe. Develop your mind through positive “Self-Talk.”

Student Success Statement
“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much”
Helen Keller
Reflection: I believe that this quote is trying to say that you shouldn't always just count on yourself but to have a little of reliance towards others. For example it is better to have a study party with a group of people from your class rather than to study all alone and be bored. When you are by yourself trying to push a heavy car, it is very hard to do and obviously you wont be successful. However if others come and help you then it will be a lot easier and you will get things done.

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens
Habit 6
Habit 6: Synergize
Synergy is achieved when two or more people work together to create something better than either could alone. Through this habit, teens learn it doesn’t have to be “Your way” or “My way” but rather a better way, a higher way. Synergy allows teens to value differences and better appreciate others. Synergy is the reward, the delicious fruit you’ll taste as you get better at living the other habits, especially at thinking Win-Win and seeking first to understand. Learning to synergize is like learning to form V formations with others instead of trying to fly life solo. You’ll be amazed at how much faster and farther you’ll go. Synergy doesn’t just happen. It’s a process. You have to get there. And the foundation of getting there is this: learn to celebrate difference.
A good band is a great example of synergy. It’s not just the drums or the guitar or the sax or the vocalist it’s all of them together that make up the sound. Each band member brings his or her strengths to the table to create something better than each could alone. No instruments are more important than another, just different.

Student success statement-
“So often, in our quest to be more popular and to be part of the “In – group” we lose sight of things that are far more important.”
Sean Covey
Reflection: I believe that this quote is trying to say that even though we all try to fit in, we can’t let that stop us from achieving the right thing. For example, I go to high school and if I am trying to be part of the cool kids, I have to be cruel to everyone and make fun of them. However, if I do, do that then, I have lost sight of my dignity and respect for others. we should always choose the right and fit in in your own  group, start a new one because you never know the victims’ real story.

7 habits of highly successful teens
Habit 5
5. Seek first to understand and then to be Understood
Because most people don’t listen very well, one of the great frustrations in life is that many people don’t feel understood. This habit will ensure your teen learns the most important communication skill there is; active listening. Why is this habit key to communication? It’s because the deepest need of the human heart is to be understood. Everyone wants to be understood. Everyone wants to respected and valued for who they are-  a unique one-of-a-kind never-to-be-cloned individual. People won’t expose their soft middles unless they feel genuine love and understanding. Once they feel it however, they will tell you more than you may want to hear. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. Listen with your eyes, heart and ears. 7 percent of communication is contained in the words we use. The rest comes from body language (53 percent) and how we say words, or the tone and feeling reflected in our voice (40 percent). Most people are eager to talk and had rather talk than listen. We have one mouth and two ears. This means we should listen twice as much as we talk. Learn to listen and listen to learn. Listen, really listen for understanding. Seek first to understand then to be understood—listen.

Valentine’s Day!
I for once was a huge fan of love and romance. I had my boyfriend of almost 2 years and we were as happy as an ordinary couple. However we have recently broken up and it was right before this year’s Valentine’s Day. I look forward to do nothing this Valentine’s day because I don’t want to. I hate Valentine’s Day with passion. I know I’m over reacting but it’s true, this year is not starting off to its best.
He however, seems to be having the time of his life talking to many girls. That is not cool with me. But it’s not like I can do anything right? He insists we be friends. But how can I be friends with the person I love?
Anyways back to Valentine’s Day, my parents are going out today and my does not expect anything from my dad. However, my dad is going to give her a surprise at work. I just wish I could be there to see it. My parents drive each other crazy sometimes, but you can see it in their eyes they have mad love for each other. I can honestly their love is unconditional. I wish I had love like that. I know I will when I grow up. But it still gets to me how two years meant nothing to him.
My valentine this year is my dog Cleo. I’m going to spend the day with her. Then after that I will be studying for my test tomorrow and doing plenty of homework. I’m glad I’ll be distracted from not having a valentine this year. But as much as I want to seem strong I’m not. I let the most important person go and he doesn’t want me back. Yes it does hurt. But I know I’ll be looking forward to nest Valentine ’s Day.

7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens
Habit 4
4. Think Win-Win
Teens can learn to foster the belief that it is possible to create an atmosphere of win – win every relationship. The habit encourages the idea that in any given discussion or situation both parties can arrive at a mutually beneficial solution. Your teens will learn to celebrate the accomplishments of others instead of being threatened by them. Win-Win is a belief that everyone can win. It’s both nice and tough all at once. I won’t step on you, but I won’t be your door mat either. You care about other people and you want them to succeed. But you also care about yourself, and you want to succeed as well. Win-Win is abundant. It is a belief that there’s plenty of success to go around. Its not either you or me. It’s both us. It’s not a matter of who gets the biggest piece of the pie. There’s more than enough food for everyone. It’s an all you can eat buffet.
Win- Win always creates more. Perhaps the most surprising benefit of thinking Win-Win is the good feeling it brings on. The true test of whether or not you are thinking Win-Win or one of those alternatives is how you feel. Win-lose and Lose-win thinking will cloud your judgment and fill you with negative feelings.
Win-Win will fill your heart with happy and serene thoughts. It will give you confidence. Even fill you with light. Think Win-Win or no deal.

“You cannot do wrong and feel right. It is impossible.”
Ezra T. Benson

Habit 3
Habit 3: Put first things first
Habit three is about Will and will not power. This habit helps teens prioritize and manage their time so that they focus on and complete the most important things in their lives. Putting first things first also means learning to overcome fears and being strong during difficult times. Its living life according to what matters most. Putting first things first deals with things that are:
Important or not important, urgent or not urgent. Let’s look at the four quadrants of time management.
Quadrant 1: Things that are important and urgent
Quadrant 2: Things that are Important but not Urgent
Quadrant 3: Things that are not important but are urgent
Quadrant 4:  Things that are not important and not urgent
1. Important & Urgent
2. Important but Not Urgent
3. Not important but Urgent
4. Not important and Not Urgent

Quadrant 2 is the ideal place to spend our time, doing things that are important but not urgent. Here’s where priorities come into play. The results for living Quadrant 2 are:
1.    Control of your life
2.    Balance
3.    High Performance
So, what quadrant are you spending most of your time? The key is to shift as much time as possible into quadrant 2 and this is accomplished by planning. Spend more time planning and incorporating the most important things first, things that matter most. Keep your eyes on the price and reach for it.

 “Student Success Statement
The only difference between those who have failed and those who have succeeded lies in the difference of their habits. Good habits are the key to all success. Bad habits are unlocked to doors to failure. Thus, the first law I will obey, which precedeth all others is—I will form good habits and become their slaves”
Og Mandino

Reflection: i believe this quote is very self-explanatory. If you have great habits and do what you are told then you will succeed. But if you have bad habits your success will be a failure thus, always choose the right and perform good habits. when you are in school you should study and behave the way you are told to. Another example is your parents. You should always listen to them and show you have respect for them  that will lead you to have so many great characteristics which is an amazing success.

Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind
If teens aren’t clear about where they want to end up in life, about their values, goals and what they stand for, they will wander, waste time, and be tossed to and fro by the options of others. Help your teen create a personal mission statement which will act as a road map and direct and guide his decision- making process.
“Keep your eyes on the prize.” Determine your desired prize and don’t quit until you have realized the achievement of your prize. Then set another prize, another goal or another desire that you would really like to achieve. Begin with the achievement of your prize in mind. Visualize then realize. Start by having a target in mind; know where you are going.
One prize or goal you definitely need to establish for yourself is the prize of honorable graduation from high school- that you will receive your diploma honestly and with integrity – that you earned it with perfect honesty.

“Whether I fail or succeed shall be no man’s doing but my own. I am the force”
Elaine Maxwell
Reflection: Maxwell is a very responsible person; because all the people I know including myself sometimes, we often try to blame others for own mistakes. We must take responsibility because it is our mistakes. When you fail at something like Maxwell it is because you chose to fail and you did not give it your one hundred percent. Therefore, always choose the right by taking responsibility.

7 habits of highly successful Teens Habit 1
(By Sean Covey but modified)
Habit 1: Be Proactive.
Being proactive is the key to unlocking the other habits. Help your teen take control and responsibility for her life. Proactive people understand that they are responsible for their own happiness or unhappiness. They don’t blame others for their own actions or feelings. Proactive people realize that the ball is in their court, that they are the captain for their own ship; that they are in control. Control of their decisions, thoughts, choices, decisions, actions, goals, and priorities. Proactive people are self-starters; they don’t wait to be told what to do, they press forward with enthusiasm toward the achievement of their assignment, their duties, their responsibilities, their obligations. Choosing to do what is right is a proactive decision. Obey the rules. Obey the law. Obey the coach. Obey the school policies. Obey your parents. Obey with exactness, and great things will come to you. Be proactive and take initiative.

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens
By Sean Covey
For teens, life is not a playground, it’s a jungle. And, being the parent of a teenager isn't any walk in the park, either. In his book, the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, author Sean Convey attempts to provide “a compass to help teens and their parents navigate the problems they encounter daily”. How will they deal with peer pressure? Motivation? Success or lack thereof? The life of a teenager is full of tough issues and life- changing decisions. As a parent, you are responsible to help them learn their principles and ethics that will help them to reach their goals and live a successful life.
While it’s all well and good to tell kids how to live their lives, “teens watch what you do more than they listen to what you say,” Convey says. So practice what you preach. Your example can be very influential.
covey himself has done well by followinga parent's example. his dad, Stephen Covey, wrote the book The 7 habits of highly successful people, which sold over 15 million copies. Sean's a chip off the old block, and no slacker. his own book has rung in a more than respectable 2 million copies sold. here are his seven habits and some ideas for helping your teen understand and apply them:

Engage regularly in the discussions and be willing to share your personal, professional and educational experiences. You can get to know your classmates through the dialogue that is created in a course environment – sometimes even better than in a face-to-face class. And the same goes to your instructor. Be sure to contact your professor—especially if you are having problems. He/she is still your instructor and will be there to guide and assist you as needed.

“It’s not WHERE you live but HOW you live that counts. It’s not where you play the game but HOW you play the game counts”

Mr. Haymore

Reflection: this is such an inspiring quote. I believe that this quote can teach many less fortunate people that no matter what you’re going through, you can always overcome it and accomplish something. For example, if you are a student in Malibu High, and a student in Huntington Park high, there is a huge difference of money environment. In Malibu the students there have more resources than we do, they have more money than we do, and they have facilities that will allow them to practice their sport. In HP high, we have our gym, our low paid wages of parents, and books that have been used more than a hundred times. However, we stand the same chance into going to a University as Malibu High does. We have to work with what we have. We can accomplish anything we want, only if we try.

Online learning therefore requires a significant commitment from you. Al education comes down to what you’re willing to invest in the experience- this is particularly true in the online environment. Commitment, self- discipline and self-motivation are all key qualities to ensuring success in an online course!

. . . is comfortable and confident with written communication                 reading and writing are the basis of most online courses, so it’s critical that you feel comfortable with this form  of communication. While some courses contain modules that include video or other activities, all of the m requires significant amounts of reading. And nearly all of your communication with your classmates and your instructor will be in writing. If these are weak areas for you, you will want to address those issues prior to enrolling or while enrolled in an online course. The PSU WRITING CENTER is available to assist you.

. . . is willing to be a member of an online community

“Goodness is the only investment that never fails”
Henry David Thoreau
Reflection: investing is a big part of many successful people life. You can invest in home, stocks, cars, clothes, etc. However those may fail and leave you with nothing. However, the only investment that never fails is goodness. What this quote means is that you can do right all the right, invest in the goodness. Yet, by doing so, this will never fail.

Successful students

10. . . . successful students are good time managers. Successful students do not procrastinate. They have learned that time control is life control and have consciously chosen to be in control of their life.
An elemental truth: You will either control time or be controlled by it! It’s your choice: you can lead or be led, establish control or relinquish control, steer your own course or follow others. Failure to take control of their own time is probably the no. 1 study skills problem for college students. It ultimately causes many students to become non- students. Procrastinators are good excuse makers. Don’t make academic harder on yourself than it already it has to be. And don’t wait until tomorrow to do it!
The 10 items listened above are paraphrased from an article by Larry M Ludewig called ten commandments for effective study skills which appeared in the Teaching Professor, December, 1992.
