Tip 5. Review your notes everyday!

Reviewing helps you reinforce what you’ve learned, so you need less time to study before a test. You’ll also be ready if you get called on in a class or have to take a pop quiz.

Tip 6. Get a good night sleep

Your brain needs rest to perform at its peak. Lack of sleep makes the day seem longer and your tasks seem more difficult.

Tip 7. Communicate your schedule to others.

If phone calls or text messages are proving to be a distraction, tell your friends that you are only available at certain times of the day and not to expect a response at other times.

Tip 8. Become a Taskmaster.

Give yourself a time budget and plan your activities accordingly. Figure out how much free time you have each week before you add any commitments.

Tip 9. Don’t waste time agonizing.

Instead of agonizing and procrastinating just do it. Wasting an entire evening worrying about something that you are supposed to be doing is not productive, and can increase your stress.

Tip 10. Determine your priorities.

You can’t do everything at once. Establish the important of each item. Then set realistic goals that are attainable.

Ten tips for successful students

1.     Attend your classes. Remember in the words of Woody Allen Seventy percent of success in life is showing up.

2.     Know your faculty. Make sure you know who your teachers are, when their office hours are and how to contact them.

3.     Make sure the faculty knows you. Sit in the front of the classroom. Participate in class discussions. Consult with your teachers during office hours.

4.     Use a daily planner. Note the dates of exams assignments term papers etc.

5.     Be organized. Prioritize your responsibilities. Manage your time. Remember everyone has the same 168 hours a week, only some of us use them better than others.

6.     Know your campus resources. Visit your academic dean office regularly. Become familiar with the services and programs offered by the counseling Center, the freshman center, the campus ministry office and the student life office.

7.     Take care of your health. Get enough sleep. Eat well balanced meals. Exercise regularly. Make inform and mature decisions about alcohol, sex and drugs. Visit the health offices as needed.

8.     Work only as necessary. Try not the exceed 20 hours during a school week. If possible, work on campus. Apply for financial aid and loans if you need them. Manage your expenses very carefully.

9.     Get involved in campus activities. It will help you learn valuable skills, expand your social network and enhance your self-confidence. Seek out opportunities to apply what you learn in the classroom.

10.                        Keep your eyes on the prize. Clarify your goals. Know why you are in high school or college in the first place. Visualize your success on a daily basis.

You don’t have to be a computer expert to successful in online learning—but you must have access to a personal computer with reliable internet access, as well as a basic level of competency in using them. Owning a computer with internet access from your home is ideal but many students use the computer labs on campus or at their offices to complete their work.

Work together. There are a number of ways that you can ensure you get the most out of your educational experience. First, participate fully. Engage regularly in the discussions and be willing to share your personal, professional and educational experiences. You can get to know your classmates through the dialogue that is created in a course environment – sometimes even better than in a face-to-face class. And the same goes to your instructor. Be sure to contact your professor—especially if you are having problems. He/she is still your instructor and will be there to guide and assist you as needed.

10. . . . successful students are good time managers. Successful students do not procrastinate. They have learned that time control is life control and have consciously chosen to be in control of their life.

       An elemental truth: You will either control time or be controlled by it! It’s your choice: you can lead or be led, establish control or relinquish control, steer your own course or follow others. Failure to take control of their own time is probably the no. 1 study skills problem for college students. It ultimately causes many students to become non- students. Procrastinators are good excuse makers. Don’t make academic harder on yourself than it already it has to be. And don’t wait until tomorrow to do it!

7. . . . understand that actions affect learning. Successful students know t their personal behavior affect their feelings and emotions which in turn can affect learning.

        If you act in a certain way that normally produces particular feelings, you will begin to experience those feelings. Act like you’re bored and you’ll become bored. Act like you’re disinterested. So the next time you have trouble concentrating in the classroom, “act” like an interested person: lean forward, place your feet flat on the floor, maintain eye contact with the professor, nod occasionally, take notes, and ask questions. Not only will you benefit directly from your actions, your classmates and professor might also get excited and enthusiastic.

8. . . . talk about what they’re learning. Successful students get to know something well enough that they can put it into words. Talking about something with friends or classmates is not only good for checking whether or not you know something, it’s a proven learning tool. Transferring ideas into words provides the most direct path for moving knowledge from short term to long term memory. You really don’t “Know” the material until you can put it into words. So, next time you study, don’t do it silently. Talk about notes, problems, reading etc. with friends, recite to a chair, organize an oral study group, and pretend you’re teaching your peers. “Talk learning” produces a whole host of memory trace that result in more learning.

5. Don’t sit in the back of the room. Successful student’s minimize classroom distractions that interfere with learning.

            Students want the best seat available for their entertainment dollars, but willingly seek the worst seat for their educational dollars. Students who sit in the back cannot possibly be their professors’ teammates (see no. 4). Why do they expose themselves to the temptations of inactive classroom experiences and distractions of the people between them and their instructor? Of course, we know they chose the back of the classroom because they seek invisibility or anonymity, both of which are antithetical to efficient and effective learning. If you are trying not to be part of the class, why, then, are you wasting your time? Push your hot buttons, is there something else you should be doing with your time?

6. . . . Take good notes. Successful students take good notes that are understandable and organized, and review them often.

            Why put something into your notes that you do not understand? Ask the questions now that are necessary to make your notes meaningful at some later time. A short review of your notes while the material is still fresh on your mind helps you to learn more. The more you learn then, the less you’ll have to learn later and the less time it will take because, you won’t have to include some deciphering time, also. The whole purpose of taking notes is to use them and to use them often. The more you use them, the more you improve.

3 . . . . Ask questions. Successful students ask questions to provide the quickest route between ignorance and knowledge. In addition to securing knowledge you seek, asking questions has at least two other extremely important benefits. The process helps you pay attention to your professor and helps your professor pay attention to you! Think about it. If you want something, go after it. Get the answer now, or fail a question later. There are no foolish questions, only foolish silence. It’s your choice.

4 . . . . Learn that a student and a professor make a team. Most instructors want exactly what you want: they would like for you to learn the material in their respective classes and earn a good grade.

                        Successful students reflect well on the efforts of any teacher; if you have learned your material, the instructor takes some justifiable pride in teaching. Join forces with your instructor, they are not an enemy, you share the same interests, the same goals- in short, your teammates. Get to know your professor. You’re the most valuable player on the team. Your jobs are to work together for mutual success. Neither wishes to chalk up a losing season. Be a team player!

Study for multiple exams

Part 2

My strategies for written assignments: everyone has their own writing styles. I generally come up with an idea and do massive amounts of research before I ever think about writing. I then organize my research then sometimes prepare an outline before actual writing. I always print out the paper and come back to it the next day and reread it. That is the easiest way for me to catch my own mistakes. I have to give my eyes a break from it, and if I just wrote it I think it looks perfect. But if I look at it a day later I almost always find grammatical errors or phrases and sentences I just want to reword.

How I succeed in my team projects: Never assume someone is doing what they are supposed to be doing. Have regular meetings and have each member show their work, not just give you or the group their word for it.

Sarah’s Academic Success Story

Part 1

Time management became a key factor in my study skills for college. In high school, there were many times I was able to study for an hour or two the night before a test and get away with it. This was not the case in college.  I made sure in college I was prepared in each class. Sometimes that meant writing out the terms for the chapter we read (even if when it isn’t required) to better understand them. That way when the midterm or test comes around I was able to understand what I was studying. I started taking excellent notes in class in college. I may have done this in high school, but in college I started typing up the notes after class. This helped me remember what I just went over in class then when I had a test one week later I was more likely to remember then as well.

My overall study method: Structured. One thing I learned was I had to adapt or change my study method according to the class. I couldn’t study for a religion class the same way for a finance class. But making sure I had enough time to study for each class - - even if it meant carrying a planner with me at all times was a big part of my success.

Work Together

Part 1

I can and will work as part of the team as long as everyone in the team is willing to do his work. I don’t like having to pick up the slack but I will if I know that my grade will be harmed otherwise. My greatest academic success was in my first semester when I had to write a 10-12 page research paper. It was the longest paper I had ever been assigned and I was a little scared. Also, it was the first paper where they were like, here you go just write about something. I had to argue in favor of or against something, but it could be anything from the sky is blue to hypnotism. I wrote mine on hypnotism. I worked on this paper for weeks and weeks. Every night I would be doing research or writing. I put so much effort into this paper. It ended up being just under 12 pages but it was full on information. I turned it in and when I got it back a week later or so, I had received the first A+ of my college career. All my hard work paid off because I got the grade I deserved. I was really happy and proud of myself.

If you feel you do not naturally have all those characteristics, then do not despair. Each of them can be accomplished by your own application. You can use meditation and visualize techniques to initiate your vision, and they can certainly be learned both for that purpose and for each step you take to reach your goals. Simply visualize your desired goals, that of being a star student, a champion of doing what is right, and see yourself working hard to become outstanding, and your dreams and vision will materialize as you pursue these objectives. Setting goals and objectives can be personal or business technique that can be learnt. You can develop inner strength to succeed if you apply yourself to doing just that; that will enable you to recover from setbacks more easily.

Whether studying or in general life, planning is an imperative skill. Here, we must strictly set the hours for studying, and should promote regularity in doing so. Don’t put off your studies to the last moment (just before the test), because in that moment you will be feeling stress and pressure, and both factors will prove disturbing for your learning; that’s the high price of procrastination. During the exam, it’s important to forget about panic and stress. And if you are planning for your thesis, you may find this post useful. Other planning tip I frequently give is that, when you are assigned a home work, try to solve it as quickly as possible, several days before the required date, but don’t try to complete it perfectly and don’t submit it immediately. I always recommend doing homework early, but deliver it at the last possible day.

Other chief habit is that of asking questions. We have to establish hypothesis and set concrete, realistic goals. After reading any text we have to ask several different questions related to its content, in order to verify if we have completely understood the text. It’s also important to try to relate such text and other areas of our knowledge. Again, linking ideas and concepts is a habit of highly successful students. So, link.

A RESULT IS A VERY BRIEF MOMENT OF LIFE, WHILE LEARNING TO DEVELOP PROCESSES IS A SKILL THAT WILL LAST FOR THE WHOLE LIFE.

·      THEY INTERPRET AND ANALYZE ERRORS AS A WAY OF INCREASING THEIR LEARNING, I.E., THEY TRY TO LEARN FROM THEIR MISTAKES. THIS WAY, THEY SEE ERRORS AND FAILURES AS OPPERTUNITIES.

·      THEY LOOK FOR THE REQUIRED INFORMATION IN SEVERAL CHANNELS (books, journals, newspaper, excerpts, internet, and so on.)

·      They consult excerpts and teachers frequently. This action provides a new perspective about the studied topics.

v Everyone wants to be successful in life, but where are the keys to success? Do we have to go out and search for those keys, or do we have those potentials already within ourselves? When we begin to examine life, we can see that it is divided into two – aspects – life within and life without; internal life and external life – and we can see that these aspects are of equal importance. Even if we renounced the world, gone far away from civilization, and live in the wilderness doing nothing but meditation, we cannot ignore external life. we still have to see that we eat, do our ablutions, and perform ouor practices on time. So life in the external world is as important as the life in the internal world.

If you prefer to play videogames, then remember that making any games requires to prepare a detailed script including history, characters, goals and relations. Therefore, you could start writing the script for your “dream” game. On the other side, you can imagine how the novel you are reading could be transformed into a videogame (start out by thinking which gaming genre fits the novel better: role playing adventure action and so on.) the basic idea is to find match point and links between our affections and our chores. And such links there always exist. Remember to link ideas and concepts is the most important habit for successful students.

Successful students also exhibit other particular traits we should internalize:
